Abstract:

Dr. Riaan den Haan attained his B.Sc from the University of Stellenbosch in 1996 and worked in Prof. Emile van Zyl’s lab in the department of Microbiology, completing an Honours BSc (1997) and a PhD (2003).  During his PhD study he developed a transformation system for the expression of heterologous proteins in the yeast Pichia stipitis.  As a post-doc and senior researcher, Dr. Den Haan was subsequently instrumental in projects concerning heterologous cellulase secretion in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in collaboration with research partners from Dartmouth College and Mascoma Corporation in the United States and VTT in Finland. This work, aiming at the use of biomass for the production of bioethanol, generated several peer reviewed articles and patents.  He has also acted as co-supervisor for 4 M.Sc. and 4 Ph.D. students. Riaan was appointed as a senior lecturer in the department of Biotechnology at the University of the Western Cape in 2014 where he is the principal investigator in a research group focussing on enhanced secretion of cellulases in S. cerevisiae.
