Abstract:Deep-sea hydrothermal vent ecosystems are supported by microbes that carry out chemosynthesis, which fixes carbon dioxide into biomass without requiring sunlight. Despite almost forty years of research, many open questions remain about chemosynthetic microbes, including: How much and how fast do they fix carbon? What metabolic pathways do they use? What factors control their ecology? I will present data from field experiments conducted on deep-sea microbial communities from the east Pacific ocean. Since the goal of this study was to estimate rates of processes in the natural environment, methods were developed to maintain in-situ pressure during experiments, and I will discuss how these data will help constrain the role of vents on a global scale. In addition, our experiments have also given us clues about the ecology of deep-sea vent microbes. Specifically, oxygen concentration had large effects on bacterial community composition, with different groups exhibiting strong positive or negative correlations with oxygen. In the future, single cell genomes from these distinct groups will offer insights into the genetic basis of this response to oxygen.
