报告题目：Synthesis of plant natural products in yeast through synthetic biology

报告英文简介：Medicinal plants have been used in China for thousands of years. Many natural products from plants show great pharmacological activities and are major sources for the discovery of new drugs nowadays. However, the supplies of some plant metabolites can’t satisfy the requirements of markets. In our lab, we focus on solving the supply problem for high-value natural products through synthetic biology. Synthetic biology will use engineering principles to design and assemble the biosynthetic pathways in microorganisms to produce medicinal natural products, precursors, and even new compounds. Firstly the genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic datasets will be constructed to dig up the genes involved in natural product biosynthesis. After isolating all the genes, the biosynthetic pathways would be reconstructed in an engineered microbial strain. And then genetically modification would be done in the strain based on the analysis results. Currently, we are investigating the genes involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoids and terpenoids in several Chinese medicinal plant species and metabolically engineering the production of scutellarin, phloretin, diosgenin and so on in yeast cells. The engineered yeast strains can serve as the basis for creating an alternative way for producing natural products in place of extractions from plant sources.
