This talk will give a reflection of research progress in applied and environmental microbiology with a key focus on several major new discoveries made on microorganisms with new physiological and biochemical capabilities. Both nitrite-dependent ammonium oxidation bacteria and methane oxidizing microorganisms (commonly called anammox and n-damo, respectively), and also the expanding Archaea in the time of metagenomics era will be used as examples to support my view and synthesis. Anammox bacteria are used as a unique example to show the history of a new scientific discovery, its evolutionary meaning and successful practical applications in removal of inorganic nitrogen from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and strategies. Prediction on future important new discoveries will also be touched on.



顾继东, 香港大学生命科学院副教授。毕业于黑龙江八一农垦大学,获农学学士学位;加拿大阿尔伯塔大学(University of Alberta)土壤生物化学及微生物学硕士;美国弗吉尼亚理工学院 (Virginia Tech) 微生物生态学博士。在美国马萨诸塞州洛厄尔研究基地(University of Massachusetts Lowell Research Foundation)和哈佛大学(Harvard University)完成博士后研究后,于1993-1998年在美国哈佛大学进行研究工作,1999始应聘香港大学理学院。多年来从事环境科学方面的研究,在环境微生物和环境毒理领域发表SCI学术论文360余篇,单篇最高引用次数520余次,超过20篇论文引用次数100次以上。专著中贡献40余章节。论文引用11,440余次,H指数为56,i-10指数为219(Google Scholar Citation). 2013年以来保持Top 1% scientists (Web of Sciences,2016.06.15).
