The four-member deep-sea research team of Shanghai Jiao Tong University returned to Sanya, Hainan Province after completing deep-sea scientific investigations with the research vessel Tan Suo Yi Hao (探索一号) in the western Pacific Ocean area. The team was led by Xiao XIANG, Dean of International Center for Deep Life Investigation (IC-DLI) and also professor of the School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology. During this voyage, the team completed eight dives (including two 10,000-meter and three 9,000-meter dives) with the manned submersible Fendouzhe (or Striver), reaching the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench and for the first time in human history descending 8,919 meters into the Yap Trench. The team collected and processed precious abyssal samples at more than 200 sites and measured a series of environmental parameters, providing valuable materials and data for the study of abyssal ecosystems.
