1. Objectives

To meet national developmental needs in the areas of society, finance, science and technology, the biotechnology program aims to educate students to gradually develop learning skills and the ability to acquire knowledge, and  to enhance their adaptability, and eventually to prepare them with the ability of “research, innovation and open-mind”.

This program is designed to guide students to coordinate development of knowledge, ability, and quality, to link theory with practice and to focus on the culturing of innovative awareness and innovative ability. In addition to teaching students in accordance of their aptitude, this program also encourage students’ individualized development, exerting enthusiasm, initiative and creativity

This program seeks to an all-round development of morality, intelligence and physique and a coordinated development of knowledge, ability and quality; to train students to master the basic theories of life science, experimental skills and related fundamental knowledge and applied research of engineering technology; to help students to master the biotechnological experimental skills and correspondent basic knowledge, and finally to prepare the students to be qualified in the areas of  biological theoretical research and applied research.

2. Regulations and Requirements

According to the requirements of science and engineering training program,, biotechnology program is supposed to embody the principle of coordinated development of knowledge, capacity, and quality; to design appropriate knowledge structure for capacity-building and quality education; to strengthen the design and construction of the knowledge structure so that each knowledge module can constitute a proper training system.

A.    Knowledge Structure

A1.In addition to the basic knowledge, the student’s knowledge in the areas of literature, history, philosophy, art, sports should be improved.

A2.With respect to the introductory research methods of disciplines of social sciences, it requires some fragments of a certain discipline, though a short-term academic exploration, so that students are exposed to the discipline’s research method, rather than learning a simplified, complete overview of discipline or common sense.

A3.With regard to the basic knowledge and cutting-edge of natural sciences and engineering technology, it requires those knowledge should be closely linked to social and personal lives, which can help students improve their scientific literacy and engineering awareness.

A4.Concerning the basic knowledge of mathematics or logistics, it requires to further develop students’ analysis ability and logical thinking ability on the basis of fundamental education.

A5.1 Master the basic theory, knowledge, skills of the professional mathematics, physics, chemistry, foreign languages, and computers.

A5.2 Master the basic skills of basic chemistry, biological experiments, and the application of computers in biology and related disciplines.

A5.3 Master the basic methodology of scientific experiments (research).

A5.4 Master the biotechnological core body of knowledge, and master the solid knowledge of life science.

A5.5 Understand the basic thought and method of how life sciences know the world.

A5.6 Understand the importance and potential development ability of life sciences as a basic discipline in our modern life. Table1 represents the core knowledge structure of biotechnology.

A5.7 Master the experimental skills of above courses and experimental data processing and analysis methods of related courses.

B Skill Requirements

B10Capacity of designing experiments and creating experimental conditions; concluding, managing and analyzing experiment results; writing papers as well as participating in academic exchanges.

C1 Possession of ambition, pursuit of verity, and realizing Chinese spirit;

3. Constitution of Course System

General education courses

General education course consists of three parts, namely, public courses, general education core courses and general education practice, with totally 48 credits. Public courses consist of ideological and political courses, English and physical education, which accounts for 25 credits; general education core courses sum up to 21 credits, that is humanities 8 credits, social sciences 4 credits, natural sciences and engineering technology 9 credits; general education practice is responsible for 2 credits.

Professional courses

Professional courses consist of basic courses, professional core courses (compulsory) and professional elective courses, which totally accounts for 78.5 credits, with basic courses 31 credits, professional compulsory courses 39.5 credits. And professional elective courses have two modules, either of which needs to complete 8 credits.

Practice courses

Practice courses consist of compulsory experiment courses, various kinds of internship, compulsory practice courses, military training and graduation project (thesis), with 16 credits, 13 credits, 3 credits and 24 credits respectively, totally 56 credits.

Selective courses

These courses are optional courses that requires students complete 20 credits in the length of all semesters. The credits can be taken from any courses apart from the compulsory and elective courses of professional education, professional education, practice education these three modules, for example, the credits of minor courses, the credits of optional courses, the exceeding credits after completing the required credits in the professional limited module, the credits of professional elective courses which has no credit requirements in some professions, the approved credits of University EnglishⅢ, University EnglishⅣ, extracurricular technology, discipline contest, and practical innovation projects.

4. Schooling system, graduation requirements and academic degree

Biotechnology has a flexible schooling system which lasts for 4-6 years. It allows students to graduate in advance after obtaining 202.5 credits. It also allows students to extend the study period but generally not more than six years. After completing the curricula required by professional training program and related practice, obtaining the required credits, with qualified assessment of morality, intelligence and physiques, students are supposed to be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science, according to the requirements stipulated by the Academic Degree Regulations of the People’s Republic of China.
