The School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology was founded by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997. The school has 3 undergraduate programs, which are biotechnology, bioengineering and bioinformatics (full English). The school owns 2 national bases of combined undergraduate and master's degree, which are the National Base of Life Science and Technology Talents Training and National Base of Biology Science Talents Training. We also co-operate with the world famous multinational companies in the field of pharmacy and biotechnology, for example, AstraZeneca, Roche and Nestle. Good employment prospects are provided to the graduate.
Program in Biotechnology
The Biotechnology program aims to educate undergraduates with a well-structured curriculum encompassing aspects of morality, intelligence and physical health. Students in the biotechnology program will be exposed to a variety of basic theories in life sciences, advanced research methods, experimental techniques in modern biology, and theoretical knowledge in biotechnology and bioengineering. The biotechnology programs graduates will be adept in basic and application oriented research and technology development in various sectors and fields, and will have the opportunity to pursue an advanced degree in related fields.
Program in Bioengineering
Bioengineering is the base of biological high-tech achievement industrialization. We pay much attention to the practice ability and comprehensive quality of the students, and educate undergraduates with solid modern life science basic theory, experimental techniques, and a certain foundation of engineering. The main research directions include microbial strain selection and fermentation, microbial metabolism, biological purification, gene engineering, enzyme engineering, cell engineering, biological pharmaceutical and health food development.
Program in Bioinformatics (Full English major)
Bioinformatics is a new discipline crossed by life science, computer science and information science. This major focuses on the acquisition, processing, storage, distribution, analysis and interpretation of biological information in genomic and proteomic research. The program aims to educate undergraduates with solid basic theory of science, basic knowledge of biology, professional knowledge of information processing and skills of computer programming.
