School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology (SLSB) has established the biology and bioengineering, bioinformatics and other disciplines, formed a complete training system from undergraduate to graduate students, doctoral students and postdoctoral students. Also covers the Engineering Master of bioengineering field. Biochemistry and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology are the National or Shanghai key disciplines.
Currently SLSB has 34 Doctoral tutors, 55 Master Instructors, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 Yangtze River Distinguished Professors, 6 Faculties with National Outstanding Youth Funding, and 6 Chief Scientists of Major National Basic Research Program (973). There are a number of famous scholars with outstanding achievements in life science and technology; some of them are young active academic leaders in various fields. The school has the following two Key Laboratories：State Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism, Key Laboratory of Genetics of Developmental and Neuropsychiatry Disorder Ministry of Education.
In recent years, the college received key supports from school "985","211" construction projects. As the focus of construction in schools, SLSB have made great progress in discipline construction, scientific research, teaching and other various aspects through the development of recent years. Academic troop and influential academic direction has formed by middle-aged academic leaders. SLSB is a key institute who has undertaken a number of key projects, including National Key Project for Basic Research (973 Project), Chinese High-Tech Program (863 Project), National Natural Science Foundation projects, and key projects of Shanghai Municipality. The annual scientific research fund kept increasing steadily. SLSB has obtained many prizes including the Second prize of National Natural Science and National Teaching Achievement, Ministry of Education and Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award; the School has earned high reputation and significant recognition in several research areas in the world. A number of scientific findings have been achieved in SLSB, and high-quality research papers published, including in the top journals of Nature, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Genetics, Nature Chemical Biology, PNAS, Plant Cell, and Molecular Microbiology.

Doctor students graduated from this subject should be processed of steady theoretical basis of molecular biology, biochemistry and others concerned of biology, practiced experimental skills and fluent speaking ability in English. Doctor students should be able to design and finish scientific projects, and launch academic research independently. 3. Educational system and credits
Four years in educational system for full-time doctor students; the total credits should not be less than 17; the study period of partially off-study doctor students could prolong one or two years after applications are permitted.
5. Interim assessment
There is a comprehensive examination for doctor students at the end of the third term, before dissertation launched. As the comprehensive examination is the necessary preparation for the opening report, it could be combined with the opening report; however, these two cannot substitute one for another. The staff of the exam must be three to five teachers who have senior academic titles. The tutor of students is allowed to participate in the exam, but cannot serve as the person in charge.
6. Opening report
The opening report is placed at the beginning of the third term. The report should expound and prove the scientific basis, purpose, contents of study, expected goals, research methods, conditions of projects, et al. The opening report must be conducted in the public disciplines or related disciplines’ areas. Three to five experts in related fields are necessary to prove the opening report, organized by the discipline chairman and the tutor. Literature reading quantity of the opening report should not be less than 50 to 100.
One year after the opening report, the interim assessment of dissertation would proceed. Students who gets excellent grade in the assessment could apply the fund of outstanding doctorial dissertation. The interim assessment report of dissertation must be delivered to affiliated discipline in written form. The tutor should make comments on the work of students, especially on task fulfillment, performance of the student and estimation of further work.
Three to five teachers are necessary to participate in the evaluation of dissertation in the phrasal sense (excellent, qualified and unqualified). During the dissertation proceeding, doctor students should make academic reports and report the development of dissertation on the seminar of research topic group once or twice a year according to the plan. The dissertation should contain two parts: the first part is a summary concerned about the project; the second part is the experimental report. The experimental report should be composed by preface, experimental material and methods, results and discussion. Requirements of the dissertation includes: new ideas, advanced methods, reliable data, clear pictures, and deep discussion. The draft of the dissertation should be completed three months before finishing study, and presented to the tutor for reviewing and approving, then judging and answer reply could be organized according to Dissertation Answer Reply and Degree Application Details of Graduated Students’ in Shanghai Jiaotong University.
8. Publishing papers
Academic papers published or employed by journals of SCI are necessary before students apply for degree dissertation answer reply. The first author of academic papers should be the applicant, and the first author affiliation should be Shanghai Jiaotong University. The impact factor should be more than 3.0, for a single paper or the cumulative amount of papers.
