报告摘要:Microbial metabolic engineering for chemicals and materials

Sang Yup Lee

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, KAIST, Daejeon, Republic of Korea

Due to our increasing awareness of climate change and environmental problems in addition to the limited nature of fossil resources, there has recently been much interest in developing sustainable system for the production of chemicals, fuels, and materials from renewable resources. Metabolic engineering has been successfully practices over two decades for the enhanced production of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. More recent advances in systems biology, synthetic biology and evolutionary engineering are allowing metabolic engineering to be performed at systems level. In this lecture, systems metabolic engineering strategies that integrate systems biological and synthetic biological approaches with metabolic engineering will be described. Several examples of producing chemicals, fuels and materials will be described in the context of systems metabolic engineering. First, amino acids will be used as example products of systems metabolic engineering. How cellular networks are engineered to overcome negative regulatory circuits, reinforcing the metabolic fluxes towards the desired product, and how fermentation is coupled during the strain development will be described. Also, development of microbial strains for the production of other chemicals and materials of industrial importance will be showcased.
